I'm no longer keeping this area up to date.
Search Engine Watch. This is an interesting free site and periodic associated newsletter ($) on WWW search engines, indexing, indexing, etc. Now (12/97) owned by MecklerMedia. Some basic and some fairly tech stuff. Sometimes repeats a few too many rumors. A list of Web "Spiders" (if you check your server logs) and "Robots." Regarding my comments on Meta Tags (see here), there's this discussion with links. Pretty darn good.
I don't maintain links to Search Engine sites anymore since most browsers have Search Engine links readily available. In general, for reputable commerce, start at Yahoo. Hotbot is currently well-regarded. I prefer Excite or Lycos. (Free tip: type http://www.exite.com and see where it takes you: these are smart boys at Excite.)
Cross-Engine Search at www.DogPile.com or MetaFind. Dogpile sometimes mis-phrases search requests
For cross-browser compatibility check out http://www.anybrowser.org/

N.B. If the table does not display tan on the left and gray-blue on the right, then you have less than 200 colors on your monitor.
